Can Practice Be Fun?

Practicing piano can often feel uninspiring. Students often quit piano because of how boring or hard piano can be.

However, just like everything else in life that feels hard and overwhelming, there are ways we can trick our brain into associating something difficult into something fun.

  1. Pair practice with something you enjoy. Have an immediate reward after each practice session. 30 minutes on the piano = 30 minutes of screen time. Have yummy snacks on hand, wear an outfit that makes you feel creative, light some candles, set the mood!

  2. Build up to a goal. Give yourself a star for every day you sit down at the piano. After 30 stars, buy yourself a special treat.

  3. Make practice into a game. Give yourself points and a prize for winning.

  4. Find the feeling of accomplishment. Write out small goals for the day and cross it off when you finish it.

  5. Play something fun to finish your session or make up your own song. Have some time in every practice that is just you and the piano connecting.
